Wilmington Airport Terminal
Expansion

Wilmington’s Airport Terminal Expansion project aims to transform the travel experience by expanding the passenger holding room by 6,000 square feet, creating space for an additional boarding gate, and introducing more concessions. This initiative will also significantly enhance passenger comfort with improved baggage claim operations, including a new conveyor system, as well as capacity and accessibility improvements to all public restrooms.

A major focus of the expansion is to streamline the security process. For the first time, the terminal will feature a dedicated TSA Pre-Check Lane, along with added capacity for an extra security lane to expedite TSA screenings. These improvements are geared towards making travel more efficient and convenient for all passengers.

Beyond passenger amenities, the project also aims to boost energy efficiency and resilience in the terminal utilities, aligning with sustainability goals while improving reliability.

The terminal originally opened in 1955, and this modernization project will bring it up to today’s standards. With support from a Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grant, secured through advocacy by Senators Carper and Coons, and Representative Blunt Rochester, this project addresses critical updates, including upgrading outdated power infrastructure to support expanded commercial aviation services. The project is expected to generate approximately 60 temporary construction jobs and open opportunities for 100 additional positions at the airport upon completion, bringing significant benefits to the local community.

Construction is currently underway, with these terminal improvements slated for completion in late 2025. This expansion marks a crucial step forward in enhancing the airport’s ability to accommodate growth and provide an exceptional experience for all travelers.
