East Boston Senior Center
New Construction and Renovations

Fennick McCredie led the transformation of the Barnes Avenue Library in the Orient Heights neighborhood of East Boston into a vibrant community senior center at 7 Bayswater Street. This project, praised for its community-driven approach, involved local residents in multiple public meetings to shape the center’s offerings and services.

Mayor Michelle Wu, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, highlighted, “This new, accessible senior center in East Boston will expand opportunities for our older adults to connect and build community.” The center, operated by the Age Strong Commission and managed by the Property Management Department, offers a wide range of programs and services for older adults.

The design celebrates unique access to green space with universally accessible landscaped gardens, accommodating additional programming in a dense urban context. Despite the compact building footprint, the interior spaces are designed to be flexible, maximizing program variety. Modern accessibility upgrades include an elevator, wave/sensor door openings, bright lighting, and a hearing loop system.

Emily K. Shea, Age Strong Commissioner, noted, “Socialization, connection, and community are vital to human well-being. The new center will provide a place for our older residents to connect with each other and engage in a richer, healthier life.”
