Wilmington Airport Breaks Ground on Terminal Expansion

On September 30, representatives from the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA), alongside state officials, celebrated the groundbreaking of the Wilmington Airport Terminal Expansion, marking a major milestone for Delaware’s aviation infrastructure. The $9.8 million expansion project, partially funded by a $5.6 million grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Airport Terminal Program, is scheduled to be completed in late 2025.

The expansion will transform the 1955-era terminal by adding 6,000 square feet to the passenger holding room, introducing a new boarding gate, and expanding concessions. The project will also improve passenger convenience with upgrades to the baggage claim system, an additional security lane with a dedicated TSA Pre-Check option, and improved public restrooms. These enhancements are aimed at increasing operational flexibility and making Wilmington Airport a more appealing and efficient travel option.

Speaking at the groundbreaking, DRBA Executive Director Thomas J. Cook expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the improved customer experience and increased capacity. The expansion will also create approximately 60 temporary construction jobs, further contributing to the local economy. New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer emphasized the broader community impact, stating that this investment strengthens the airport’s capacity to serve Delaware residents and visitors.

This groundbreaking is a significant step in modernizing the Wilmington Airport, making it more accessible, sustainable, and ready to accommodate growing travel demands in the region.
