Clougherty Pool Ribbon Cutting
July 25th marked a momentous occasion for the Charlestown community as our project team, city officials and residents gathered to celebrate the reopening of the Clougherty Pool. This event highlighted the City of Boston’s dedication to enhancing local facilities for future generations.
Mayor Michelle Wu addressed the attendees, emphasizing that the total renovation of the Clougherty Pool was a testament to community action and involvement. She noted that Charlestown residents didn’t settle for merely restoring the pool but aimed to improve it significantly. Through extensive public meetings, community surveys, and collaborative efforts, the renovation was shaped by the voices of those who know the pool best.
The newly renovated pool features a six-lane lap pool certified for USA Swimming competitions, complete with removable starting blocks and an accessible ramp entrance. Additionally, the family pool’s “zero entry” design enhances accessibility, ensuring it is welcoming for all residents. Upgrades also include a new filtration system, improved lighting and Wi-Fi, expanded seating areas, and new fencing.
Mayor Wu also highlighted the importance of the pool for young people, from new swimmers in the Connect, Learn, Explore swim program to lifeguards who ensure safety. The city partnered with unions to secure flexible contracts and bonus pay, enhancing recruitment and connecting Boston’s youth to high-quality, well-paying jobs this summer.
Originally opened in 1949, the Clougherty Pool had been closed for two years due to extensive repair needs. The successful reopening of the pool is a significant milestone, with the bathhouse renovation set to be completed next summer. The renewed facility promises to be a vibrant community space where residents can gather and enjoy for years to come.
