UMass Amherst Thompson Tower Lobby
Renovation

FM explored several different schematic design options to help UMass define the appropriate scale and target budget for the expansion and renovation of the 1,600sf lobby of Thompson Hall, a 10 story high-rise building. The selected design option included a small vestibule expansion and a new curtain wall system that pushed the glazed wall area out to the overhang of the upper floors above. The vestibule provides a natural way-finding element, clearly identifying the building entry with custom building signage printed onto laminated glass panels. Relocating the curtain wall provided approximately 100sf of additional seating area within the lobby, as well as the opportunity to capture more natural daylight within the space.

Within the lobby interior, new finishes were selected to create a lighter, airier gathering space. Dark wood paneling was strategically replaced with lighter oak wall panels. Durability and ease of maintenance were also important factors that guided the material selection process. The existing slate floor was repaired and resealed, helping the project stay on budget and schedule, and avoiding the additional embodied carbon associated with the installation of new flooring material.

The updated interior transformed the underutilized lobby into a vibrant gathering space for students, staff, and faculty.
