Horace Mann K-8 School
Multiple interior courtyards, formed by new building additions set against the 1960’s era existing classroom wings, were programmed as both public and teaching space, allowing connection and transparency throughout the large floorplate and improving a sense of openness to the entire educational environment. From this organizational consideration rose a broader design approach involving natural light and outdoor activity penetrating the entire building from the “inside out”. Wayfinding, interior environmental quality, sightlines, and orientation all benefitted from the application of this concept, resulting in a more positive learning environment.
