Clougherty Pool

The Clougherty Pool has been a beloved fixture in the community since its opening in 1949. Recently, we completed a comprehensive renovation of the pool facilities, a project that underscores our commitment to inclusivity, community involvement, and modernization.

Phase 1 Completion: On July 25th, the Charlestown community, city officials, and our project team celebrated the reopening of the newly renovated Clougherty Pool. This milestone is a testament to the City of Boston’s dedication to enhancing local facilities for future generations. Through extensive public meetings, community surveys, and collaborative efforts, the renovation was shaped by the voices of those who know the pool best.

The newly renovated pool features:

  • A modern 1940 sq ft six-lane lap pool, certified for USA Swimming competitions, with removable starting blocks and an accessible ramp entrance.
  • A spacious 2970 sq ft family pool with accessible zero entry, five interactive spray features, and a shade structure.
  • An accessible viewing platform and expanded IPE wood bench seating along the existing concrete bleachers.
  • Upgrades including a new filtration system, improved lighting and Wi-Fi, expanded seating areas, and new fencing.

Inclusivity and Community Involvement: The new design prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring the pool is welcoming for all residents. The “zero entry” design of the family pool and the accessible ramp entrance of the lap pool are key features that make the pool usable by people of all abilities. This renovation reflects the community’s commitment to not just restoring the pool, but significantly improving it for the benefit of all.

Phase 2 and Future Plans: Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the project, scheduled for completion next summer, will focus on the renovation of the bathhouse. This phase will include:

  • An elevator to ensure accessibility for all.
  • Family/universal locker rooms to accommodate diverse needs.
  • A community room for gatherings and events.
  • Concessions to enhance the visitor experience.
  • A roof terrace providing additional recreational space.

The comprehensive $35.5 million investment in the project is part of Mayor Wu’s Connect, Learn, & Explore initiative, which aims to make Boston the best city in the country to raise a family. This initiative ensures that all of Boston’s children learn how to ride a bike, swim, and connect with their communities through sports, gardening, and the arts.

The successful reopening of the Clougherty Pool marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide vibrant community spaces. The new pools are now open and ready for residents to enjoy. We are proud to have been a part of this transformative project and look forward to the completion of the bathhouse next summer, further enhancing this cherished community asset.
